Yesterday, NBC’s Today found themselves cutting singer, Janelle Monae , off during her performance when she began speaking on police brutality.
The topic is undoubtedly touchy but Janelle Monae has been seen advocating for Black Lives Matter but we guess Today didn’t feel like it was conducive to the flow of their agenda.
So here’s what happened: at the end of her performance of the new Wondaland Records protest anthem, “Hell You Talmbout,” Monae began to speak on the people who lost their lives at the hands of the police as well as the overall racism climate in the U.S.
“God bless America, God bless all the lives lost to police brutality. We want white America to know that we stand tall today. We want black America to know we stand tall today. We will not be silenced!”
And all of a sudden, an anchor proceeds to babble over her performance before appearing to break for commercials.
Coincidental?! Or nah?
Her mini speech wasn’t her first approach to address the situation. She said upon the release of the song, “Hell You Talmbout” that it is a vessel and “carries the unbearable anguish of millions. We recorded it to channel the pain, fear, and trauma caused by the ongoing slaughter of our brothers and sisters. We recorded it to challenge the indifference, disregard, and negligence of all who remain quiet about this issue. Silence is our enemy. Sound is our weapon.”
Let’s chat below, do you think it was intentional or did Janelle run past her time?
