Jay-Z Says He And Beyonce Were Not Sitting In Protest During The Super Bowl

This year’s Super Bowl brought all of your favorite celebs out from Meek Mill to Lizzo, and Jay-Z and Beyonce! While Jay and Bey usually have the spotlight just for being themselves, this time, some folks did not take well to what they thought was the power couple making a statement during the game.

While Demi Lovato slayed her rendition of the National Anthem, Jay and Bey could be seen sitting peacefully in their box seats–and the internet started going wild. Many people took The Carter’s decision to remain seated as a form of protest, including controversial political figure Tomi Lahren.

In light of Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the National Anthem to protest police brutality, it seems like The Carter’s decision to remain seated falls in line with the same political stance. Jay, however, says that’s not the case.

In a video obtained by TMZ, Jay clarifies the speculation around he and his wife sitting down, and apparently it was all just a misunderstanding. Jay was on a panel at Columbia University, and when the moderator asked about his intentions behind sitting he said there was no protest.

“It actually wasn’t meant to be a statement, sorry,” Jay says.

He goes on to explain that he and Bey were simply “working” and analyzing the performances from an artists perspective.
