Jermaine Dupri On Female Rappers Today: “They’re All Rapping About The Same Thing—It’s Like Strippers Rapping”

There are many on-going debates about female rappers. From who’s really rapping, to who’s the Queen. Jermaine Dupri sat down with People and said what he said about his thoughts on female rappers today.

He started off with saying how Da Brat was the first solo female rapper to go platinum, adding that since then women have taken over with selling more records than men. “Prior to Brat that wasn’t happening. There were good artists, but they weren’t doing the numbers I needed for my company.”

When asked who his favorite rapper from today is, he couldn’t say. His reasoning was that they all rap about the same thing and “as far as rap goes, I’m not getting who’s the best rapper.”

“I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s like strippers rapping…I’m getting a story about you dancing in the club, I’m getting a story about you dancing in the club—who’s gonna be the rapper?”

JD adds that someone will eventually break the mold and rap about other things.
