Jessinya Mina, a 22-year-old California mother, has reportedly passed away after being shot by her 2-year-old son.
According to USA Today, the incident occurred in Mina’s apartment around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 6. Authorities reportedly believe that her 2-year-old son found an unsecured gun in her bedroom and pulled the trigger. Ultimately, Mina was struck by a “single gunshot wound to her upper body.”
Per the outlet, police subsequently arrested Mina’s 18-year-old boyfriend, Andrew Sanchez. USA Today reports that Sanchez was booked into Fresno County Jail. Additionally, he was reportedly charged with felony negligent storage of a firearm and felony child endangerment.
“Detectives learned Sanchez negligently left his loaded 9mm handgun in a location within their bedroom, where children were able to access it,” a news release asserts per the outlet. “While handling the firearm, the toddler pulled the trigger and fatally struck his mother with one round.”
According to the outlet, as of Wednesday, December 11, Sanchez no longer appeared to be listed as an inmate. However, it remains unclear whether he has retained an attorney.
Additionally, detectives are reportedly working to determine to whom the firearm was registered. Lastly, a GoFundMe campaign has since been launched in Mina’s honor.
As The Shade Room previously reported, another shooting tragedy struck a family in Florida. In November, Melissa Valbrum was accused of shooting her 15-year-old daughter at a McDonald’s.
The incident ultimately results in Valbrum being arrested and hit with multiple charges.
