Kendrick Lamar dropped a new single called “The Blacker The Berry” just a day after winning at the Grammy’s and if you are a true fan then you know most of Lamar’s greatest hits are the most controversial. Produced by Boi-1da with additional production contributed by Terrace Martin as well as a reggae contribution from the artist Assassin, the song is definitely deep.
As you may recall the famous snub Lamar got at last year’s Grammy’s when Macklemore won four out of the seven categories Lamar was nominated for including Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best New Artist. Well Lamar came back with a vengence and won in this year’s Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance categories for his single “I”. Enimem ended up winning Best Rap Album this year, which may have contributed to Lamar releasing this song.
He held no bars in this song as he intensively talks about societal issues mainly calling out racism and violence in America. Here’s some of his lyrics below:
I’m African-American, I’m African
I’m black as the moon, heritage of a small village
Pardon my residence
Came from the bottom of mankind
My hair is nappy, my d is big, my nose is round and wide
You hate me don’t you?
You hate my people, your plan is to terminate my culture
You f’ evil I want you to recognize that I’m a proud monkey
You vandalize my perception but can’t take style from me
And this is more than confession
I mean I might just press the button so you know my discretion
I’m guardin’ my feelin’s, I know that you feel it
You sabotaged my community, makin’ a killin’
You made me a killer, emancipation of a real n
As you can see Kendrick Lamar WENT IN!!! And as far as his fans go it looks like the song is a big hit and could not have come at a better time as racial profiling and violence seems to be at an all time high. Take a listen to the entire song and let’s chat below.
