Is the tuna as fake as some of these Birkins? Chile, at Subway it might be!
According to reports, Subway may not be serving real tuna sandwiches. The New York Times published a study that revealed lab tests didnt find any amplifiable tuna DNA in Subways tuna sandwich.
Amid a lawsuit against Subway that accused the company of imitating by blending components, the publication reportedly submitted 60 inches worth of Subway sandwiches from several restaurants located in Los Angeles.
The study revealed that they couldnt detect any tuna, nor could the study determine the actual components of the fish that the sandwiches are made with.
No amplifiable tuna DNA was present in the sample, and so we obtained no amplification products from the DNA. Therefore, we cannot identify the species, the report says.
Ultimately, it appears that there are only two conclusions, according to a lab spokesperson.
[There are] two conclusions. One, its so heavily processed that whatever we could pull out, we couldnt make an identification, the lab spokesperson explained. Or we got some and theres just nothing there thats tuna.
An expert apparently also pointed out that protein can be difficult to determine after being cooked.
In a statement given to @Complex, Subway stated, in part, that the claims are baseless. The taste and quality of our tuna make it one of Subways most popular products, and these baseless accusations threaten to damage our franchisees, small business owners who work tirelessly to uphold the high standards that Subway sets for all of its products, including its tuna,
