Lil Wayne Recalls The Time He Thought 21 Savage Was A Rap Group

Lil Wayne is the latest guest on the “Drink Champs” podcast with Nore, and aside from talking about his new album “Funeral,” he also talked about how Jay-Z has been there for him throughout the years and has helped him when needed. He also reflected on how he’s so focused on what he’s doing he’s not always aware of some of the changes that go on within the industry.

According to Complex, in one moment he recalls not always knowing new artists by their names, and that sometimes led to a few misunderstandings. He said, “I’ve ran into a bunch of artists that had problems with me saying before that I don’t know them publicly and saying that I don’t know who that person was or maybe mistaking that person.”

One artist he was unaware of at first was 21 Savage. Wayne continued, “I remember I mistook 21 Savage for a damn group. When they asked me I said, ‘They got 21 f*cking little rappers in one group?’ I was so serious. I was like, ‘Man, that’s like a new Wu-Tang, right?’ And the person with the mic was like ‘You serious right now, huh?’ and I was like ‘I’m very serious.’”

When it comes to his relationship with Jay-Z, he talked about the time Jay-Z tried to sign Young Money, while he was going through some things.

He reflected and said, “First of all it was a privilege, more than a privilege . . .  What he was doing was he was just trying to help in any form or fashion. So he was like ‘If I gotta sign your mom, man, whatever I gotta do to help you out in your situation that you’re going through right now.’ He was like ‘I know it’s embarrassing. They got shit all public. What I wanna do is make sure you’re straight as a man. The rap shit, you’re gonna always be good with that. Eyes closed, you got that. I just wanna make sure you good, your parents, your family.'”
