Lizzo’s Proud Mother Honors Her With People’s Champion Award

At the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, Lizzo walked away with quite the honor: the “People’s Champion Award!” Additionally, the “Rumors” singer received the award from none other than her mother, Shari Johnson-Jefferson.

17 Activists Get A Shoutout From The People’s Champ

While introducing her daughter to the stage, Shari proudly noted that Lizzo “has shown us all that we don’t have to conform to anyone’s standards in order to be happy.”

Upon being welcomed and receiving the honor, Lizzo went on to give a brief personal acknowledgement before sharing the spotlight with other change-makers.

“To be an icon isn’t about how long you’ve had your platform. Being an icon is what you do with that platform. And ever since the beginning of my career, I’ve used my platform to amplify marginalized voices. So, tonight I am sharing this honor. Make some noise for the people, y’all!”

She then proceeded to welcome 17 activists to the stage, including Shirley Raines, Amariyanna Copeny (aka Little Miss Flint), and Tamika Palmer—Breonna Taylor’s mother.

One by one, Lizzo went through and gave a brief description of all the activists’ causes, showing she truly wanted to honor real-life champions for the people. Eventually, she wrapped up by exclaiming, “Power will always be to the people!”

At this point, we should add that reports began surfacing last month that Lizzo would receive the honor. According to Variety, Cassandra Tryon—a higher-up at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming—explained the decision by praising Lizzo’s advocacy.

“She leads with kindness, advocates for inclusivity and champions increased diversity and equity in the industry and beyond. Her commitment to breaking barriers and empowering others to use their own voices to create change makes her a true ‘People’s Champion.'”

Lizzo Was Just Recognized As TikTok’s Top Hitmaker Of 2022

Lizzo notably received the People’s Champion Award on the very same day that TikTok presented her with an honor of its own.

As The Shade Room previously reported, the social media platform named Lizzo its #1 “Hitmaker” of the year. Other stars who received a shoutout in the category include Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, and Selena Gomez, while artists like Ice Spice, GloRilla, and Muni Long were included in the “Emerging Artists” section.

Lizzo acknowledged her accolade on Twitter by succinctly referring to herself as a “viral sensation.”

Shoutout to both Lizzo and her mother, Shari Johnson-Jefferson!
