Mickey Guyton, Jimmie Allen & Kane Brown Made History At The Academy Of Country Music Awards

The Academy of Country Music Awards aired on CBS on Sunday night and let’s just say Black artists came through shattering ceilings and making Black history! Country singer Mickey Guyton co-hosted the show, alongside singer Keith Urban. So, she is now the first Black woman to host the awards show. Mickey also graced the stage with a performance tonight.

If you didn’t know, Mickey is the talented voice behind the song ‘Black Like Me’ and she is no stranger to making history. The singer is the “first Black solo female artist to earn a Grammy nomination in a country music category,” according to CNN. She also performed an original song at the ACMAs and was the first black solo artist to do so.

Jimmie Allen is the country singer behind the hit “Best Shot.” Tonight, he became the first Black artist to win the award for New Male Artist Of The Year. Jimmie spoke to the New York Post about his historic win.

“It’s about time,” Jimmie said to The Post. “What I’m hoping it does is open some doors for more black artists to have success in country and more black artists to feel comfortable enough to do country if that’s what they want to do.”

And the list doesn’t end there. Kane Brown won the Video of the Year Award for his track “Worldwide Beautiful.” He is the first Black solo artist winner.

Black artists also showed up to command the stage with performances, The New York Post reported. Along with Mickey, tonight’s winners Jimmie and Kane also got an opportunity to showcase their talents on the big stage.

Carrie Underwood’s performance also featured the gospel superstar CeCe Winans. Last, but not least, viewers also got a special treat with the Black, husband and wife duo Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount — known musically as The War and Treaty.
