Missy Elliott has avoided a legal showdown in court. Details On Missy Elliott’s Ongoing Lawsuit

For seven years, Missy Elliott has been tangled in a lawsuit with Terry Williams, a former collaborator who swore he co-wrote four songs for her, per HotNewHipHop. These tracks were reportedly from her group Sistas 1994 album, ‘4 All the Sistas Around Da World.’ Terry claimed in his complaint that Elliott published their joint work without giving him credit or royalties. He even mentioned Aaliyahs 1996 song ‘Heartbroken’ in the suit, alleging he was entitled to compensation and credit. But the court rejected his request. In August 2024, U.S. District Judge Nitza Quiones Alejandro dismissed Terry’s claim about Aaliyah’s song because he waited over two decades to raise the issue.

The Reason Behind The Long Delay In Missy’s Lawsuit

But the case wasnt over. Terry continued to fight for recognition as a co-author on the Sistas tracks, as well as damages for breach of contract, and compensation for what he called unjust enrichment. Elliott, on the other hand, claimed she had written the songs on her own while staying firm on protecting her legacy as a songwriter. The dispute carried on, with Terry representing himself after his lawyer reportedly bailed in 2019, during which time some claims against record labels and Timbaland were also dismissed.

By August, jury selection was about to start in a Philadelphia federal courtroom. And on August 22, a settlement was reached, saving Missy from a trial altogether. It’s worth noting that specific details regarding the settlement have not been publicly disclosed.
