The Nation’s First Girl Scout Troop Comprised Of Homeless Girls Holds Its First Cookie Sale!

#GirlScouts Troop 6000 out of #NYC is a troop made up of homeless girls who exclusively serve other homeless girls in the city’s shelter system. Last July, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio’s office began a partnership between the city’s Department of Homeless Services and the Girl Scouts of Greater New York to invest $1 million over a 3-year period to expand the troop.

There are now 15 sites in the entire city and the girls are ready to do some big tingz in the Big Apple! They just announced that they’ll be selling cookies for the first time and had a goal of 6,000 boxes, but are already more than halfway to crushing it! The money will go towards funding trips, uniforms and activities for the girls.

Troop founder Giselle Burgess tells @NY1 that she started the group to expose her children and others who to people who may be experiencing similar hardships. “We’re scared, we’re nervous, and we don’t know what’s going in the situation as an adult, so imagine how they must feel,” Burgess said. “I definitely felt that they needed to be able to connect with someone, with peers that are living through the same situations that they have.”

You can find the girls at their booth sponsored by Kellogg’s cereal at East 17th Street in Union Square. They will be there from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. until Monday, April 15. You may also purchase them online here.
