New Image Of Brittney Griner Released By Russian TV Station Following Her Arrest

Following her arrest last month in Russia on drug-related charges stemming from vape cartridges she was carrying, a new image of WNBA star Brittney Griner has just been released by a local television station, Russian State TV. Earlier this week, the U.S. government stated that it was aware of Brittney Griner’s situation and was actively working on a way to get her home. If she’s convicted of her charges in Russia, she faces up to 10 years in prison there.

Additionally, there are alarming reports surrounding the current safety of Brittney Griner in Russia during so much turmoil and unrest. As her current whereabouts remain unknown, the Russian Foreign Ministry has not issued any information regarding her arrest despite numerous requests to do so. During a recent interview with Russia 24, the country’s main news channel, a member of the Russia Federal Customs Service explained the charge against Griner.

“A criminal case has been opened against an American citizen under section 2 of 229 YK RF (Russian law) for smuggling of a significant amount of drugs,” the representative said, which is underneath the Fight Against Smuggling of the Federal Customs Service law. The U.S. House Armed Services Committee acknowledged that “it’s going to be very difficult” to get Griner out of Russia given the current situation.

Democratic Rep. john Garamendi echoed that sentiment, as he highlighted the extremely strained relationship between Russia and the U.S. right now. “Our diplomatic relationships with Russia are nonexistent at the moment. Perhaps during the various negotiations that may take place, she might be able to be one of the solutions. I don’t know,” he said.

Garamendi also added that “Russia has some very, very strict LGBT rules and laws,” however it’s unclear at this time if those rules and laws will impact Brittney Griner.
