#Roommates, New York recently took the first step in its statewide efforts to aid residents in returning to various public venues and businesses. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo just announced the launch of the country’s first digital app to confirm proof of vaccination against COVID-19—which will be required to gain entry to many of the states businesses and events…and more states are looking to follow suit.
@USAToday reports, beginning on April 2nd, New York residents will have the ability to pull up a QR code on their smartphone or a printout, showing proof that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or tested negative for the virus causing it. Formally known as an Excelsior Pass, it will serve as an official certification that will be used for the very first time in New York. Residents will need their Excelsior Pass to gain entry into popular venues such as Madison Square Garden—with dozens of additional state event, arts and entertainment venues to follow.
As for how the Excelsior Pass works, the essential process is similar to how an airline boarding pass operates. Users will confirm their vaccination status by officially downloading the Excelsior Pass app, enter their name, DOB, zip code and answer a series of questions to further confirm identity. That information is said to come directly from the New York vaccine registry that will be linked to testing data from various pre-approved testing companies.
Andrew Cuomo took to social media to formally announce the introduction of the Excelsior Pass. “Today we launched Excelsior Pass, a free platform for businesses & individuals that can be used to easily access secure proof of a recent negative COVID test or vaccination. It’s a first of its kind tool to help NY fight COVID while reopening our economy safely,” he tweeted.
Governor Cuomo further elaborated on the use of the digital app in an official statement:
“New Yorkers have proven they can follow public health guidance to beat back COVID, and the innovative Excelsior Pass is another tool in our new toolbox to fight the virus while allowing more sectors of the economy to reopen safely and keeping personal information secure. The question of ‘public health or the economy’ has always been a false choice — the answer must be both. As more New Yorkers get vaccinated each day and as key public health metrics continue to regularly reach their lowest rates in months, the first-in-the-nation Excelsior Pass heralds the next step in our thoughtful, science-based reopening.”
Meanwhile, other states across the country are also looking at adopting the same measure of the Excelsior Pass although many experts say that there are several challenges ahead before this practice becomes widespread. There has also been intense criticism of the launch, as many see it as an end to their civil liberties and freedom.
