Cormega Copening is 17-years-old and is facing a life changing experience over some nude pics of him and his bae. Not only is he looking at 10 years behind bars and facing two counts of second-degree sexual exploitation and three counts of third-degree exploitation, he also will potentially be forced to register as a sex offender.
How did he rack up 10 years?! In NC, for each count of a felony charge carries at least two years in jail.
Here’s the legalities of it: legal consent in NC is age 16, but 16 is also considered as an adult when it comes time to be charged for crimes. However, although Cormega’s girlfriend is 16, you must be over 18 to “disseminate and receive sexually explicit texts, photos, or videos.”
Cormega got busted in the midst of a separate police investigation. Apparently, the police found the naked pics of Cormega and his girlfriend in both of their phones.
So what’s the deal with his girlfriend? While he is facing those 10 years, she allegedly took a plea deal and was only sentenced to one year of probation without cell phone access and a $200 fine, in addition to a class that teaches making smarter life decisions.
Such extreme differences in sentences!
Unaffiliated attorney, Karl Knudsen, told Fox News, “You can be labeled a convicted sex offender as an adult at the age of 16, but you are a minor by being under the age of 18 to commit the offense in the first place… It really makes terrible sense logically, but that’s the way the law is written.” He feels that Cormega’s consequences are over the top.
He is set to appear in court September 30th.
