New York City seems to be cleaning up its act just in time for All Star Weekend and Fashion Week as reports come in that the city hasn’t seen a murder in 11 days!
“This extraordinary streak of safety over the past several days is testament to the hard work of the men and women of the NYPD, and further evidence that New York City is the safest big city in America,” Mayor de Blasio said. “It’s also proof we can bring police and the community closer together and keep crime down in our neighborhoods.”
I guess he’s not going to state the fact that it is also below freezing! I don’t know about ya’ll but the snow kept me in the house this past week!
According to the NY Daily News, this is longest time NYC has gone without a homicide since 1994, when the NYPD’s computerized crime-tracking system, also known as the CompStat, was put in place. The last reported homicide was Super Bowl Sunday when a man in Harlem was shot in the head on W.136th St. and Broadway.
A 10 day stretch also happened the same time last year as a murder went unreported from Feb.13 to Feb.22, maybe everyone is also too busy boo loving for V-day instead of trying to be in these cold streets! The only other times that this stretch has happened was also in January and October of 2013, where there was no reported homicide for a week.
Some people thought that Mayor De Blasio taking away the stop-and-frisk tactic would work against the city and would cause crime to rise, well as of Feb.8, crime as been down about 2.5% compared to last year. Looks like he showed them!
“Long may it last,” said Eugene O’Donnell, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former NYPD cop. “There’s no reason to believe it will, but we should be thrilled overall. It certainly is good for de Blasio.”
Ironic that it also happens during Black History Month, we are just glad that no more of our black men or people in general are being gunned down by police or eachother. Let’s just hope that this streak lasts through the weekend so that everyone can come down and enjoy All Star Weekend and go home back to their families!
