One Dead And 13 Injured Following A Shooting At A Kroger Grocery Store In Tennessee

Today an unfortunate tragedy struck a Tennessee community due to gun violence.  Earlier, news broke that there was a shooting at a Kroger grocery store in Collierville, Tennessee, outside of Memphis. All eyes turned to Twitter as Collierville started to trend as details were revealed that the shooting resulted in at least one person dying and 13 others injured.

According to ABC News, the shooting occurred at about 1:30 p.m. when the gunman opened fire. Police said individuals inside the store began to hide in freezers and locked themselves inside offices. One employee fled to the roof and was eventually safely escorted off by police. A cashier shared details about what happened during the time of the shooting to Memphis ABC affiliate WATN. She said that she ran into a back room with customers once the gunman came in shooting. The cashier recalled the gunman striking an employee in the head, a customer in the stomach, and another employee in the cheek. After that, she said the gunman left but continued to open fire.

Kroger, the seventh-largest American-owned private employer in the U.S., has released a statement through a spokesperson. “The entire Kroger family offers our thoughts, prayers, and support to the individuals and families of the victims during this difficult time. We are cooperating with local law enforcement, who have secured the store and parking lot.” The statement continues advising the store will remain closed while the police investigation continues, and they have initiated counseling services for their associates.

Although there hasn’t been any update about the cause of the shooting, officials did advise the unidentified shooter died due to what they believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Currently, there has been an updated amount of at least 14 individuals who have visited local hospitals. Five of those are in critical condition, while one has been discharged, hospital staff confirmed.
