Online Voter Registration Reportedly Shut Down In Virginia After An “Accidentally” Cut Wire Caused A Network Outage

Roommates, today is the very last day to register to vote online in the state of Virginia, but things have taken an abrupt halt, according to WUSA 9. The local outlet is reporting that online voting registration has been shut down, after an “accidentally” cut cable has caused a network outage.

The Virginia Information Technology agency confirmed that a fiber cut in a wire was the cause of the outage in a tweet.

“This morning we were alerted by VITA that a fiber cut near the Commonwealth Enterprise Solutions Center was impacting data circuits and VPN connectivity for multiple agencies. This has affected the citizen total along w/ registrar’s offices.”

The Department Of Elections has since revealed that technicians are on site and working to repair the wire, but access to the system has not yet been restored.

“Due to a network outage, the Citizen Portal is temporarily unavailable. We are working with our network providers to restore service as quickly as possible,” the Virginia Department of Elections posted on its website.

WUSA9 reports that voter who has already received a Mal-in ballot need to have them postmarked by Nov. 3. All signatures must be correct, or you ballot may be thrown out.
