Philando Castile’s Former High School Raises Money For A Scholarship In His Name

It’s been over a month since the wrongful murder of Philando Castile, but his community is working to make sure that his memory remains alive.

Recently his former high school, St. Paul Central High School started a scholarship in his name.

According to the Star Tribune, recipients of the scholarship will include underprivileged students who are looking to have a career in education or child development.

At the time of his death, Castile served as a nutritionist for the St. Paul public schools. Many of the children he worked with and their families were left in shock by his death back in July.

The schools foundation to benefit the scholarship recently held a fundraiser on August 21st.

Karla Basta, the event organizer, and also a former classmate of Castile said, “We all had a lot of rage and anger and grief, and we decided to channel that. Central is a really loyal school, and this was all done by Central alumni.”

They were able to raise more than $25,000, which will be added to the $10,000 that was raised prior to the fundraiser.

It’s great to see the community sticking together after experiencing such a difficult time.
