Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Daunte Wright Has Been Identified As Kim Potter (Update)

The officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright has been identified as 26-year veteran Kim Potter, @wcco reports. The site also reports that Potter has obtained a lawyer and is now on administrative leave.

As previously mentioned, the medical examiner has ruled this shooting a homicide. “This individual died of a gunshot wound of the chest and manner of death is homicide. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is the investigating agency,” the press release stated.

Naisha Wright, the auntie of Daunte Wright, spoke with CNN and stated, “He didn’t deserve to die,” and that Daunte was a “good kid.” She also stated that she’s owned a taser herself and there’s a distinction between a gun and a taser.

As previously reported, Minnesota Chief of Police Tim Gannon, released a statement regarding his findings in the fatal shooting death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright. Gannon now claims that Potter intended to fire a taser, not a handgun. Gannon further described the shooting as “an accidental discharge,” saying that Potter made a mistake. Potter is heard shouting “Taser! Taser! Taser!” on the body camera footage. After firing her handgun, Potter gets inside her police car and can be heard saying “Holy s**t! I shot him.”

As you know, Daunte Wright was shot on Sunday by Potter during a traffic stop and protests erupted in the city. He was killed about 10 miles from where George Floyd, Black man killed by ex-officer Derek Chauvin, in 2020. Chauvin is currently on trial for Floyd’s death. Closing arguments are set to begin on Monday, as both, the state and defense, have rested their cases,
