Prince’s Family Sues Illinois Hospital And Walgreens Over His Death

Just days before the two-year anniversary of Prince’s passing, it was announced there would be no criminal charges filed and the investigation into his death was closed.

According to Rolling Stone, Prince’s family is now suing the hospital Prince was treated at the week before his death, and also the pharmacy chain Walgreens.

Prince was briefly treated at the Trinity Medical Center in Moline, Illinois after his plane made an emergency landing due to an overdose. In the lawsuit, the family claims the hospital failed to properly investigate Prince’s overdose, and that had a “direct proximate cause” on his death.

Dr. Nicole Mancha and a hospital employee were named in the lawsuit for misidentifying the pill Prince had taken prior to his overdose. The pill had markings of hydrocodone, but it was later discovered the pill was a counterfeit and contained fentanyl.

Since investigators were unable to determine how Prince got the pills, there was no one to charge for his death.

Prince’s family also accused two Walgreens in Minnesota for “dispensing narcotic prescription medications” for an invalid medical purpose.

John Goetz, the family’s attorney said in a statement, “What happened to Prince is happening to families across America. Prince’s family wishes, through its investigation, to shed additional light on what happened to Prince. At the same time, further light on the opiate epidemic will hopefully help the fight to save lives. If Prince’s death helps save lives, then all was not lost.”
