R.Kelly Trial Set For Early April 2021 In Brooklyn, NY (Update)

R. Kelly has been in jail for over a year due to several charges. The R&B singer faces a 13-count indictment in a federal court in Chicago and five additional charges from New York. He was initially arrested by the NYPD and Homeland Security in Chicago back in July 2019, but was brought back to New York City. R. Kelly was indicted on charges including racketeering, forced labor, and sexually exploiting children.

Originally, his trial date was set for April 2020 but was postponed. Yesterday a judge ordered his new trial date to be scheduled for early April, in Brooklyn, NY, according to Page Six. The jurors for the case will be selected over the course of 10 days, starting in mid-March, and the trial is scheduled to begin by April 7th. U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly announced publicly in October that the jury selection would be anonymous and partially sequestered. Judge Ann stated, “The government has established that empaneling an anonymous and partially sequestered jury is warranted.”

She also mentioned that US Marshals are planning to escort the panel of jurors in and out of the Brooklyn federal courthouse each day and sequester them during breaks to protect them from outside influence.

Since the release of the six-part Lifetime documentary series, “Surviving R. Kelly,” which was released in January 2019, and part two in January 2020 detailed several women’s claims that the singer sexually, physically, and mentally abused them, many people have taken an interest in the claims.

Although R. Kelly has denied all of the accusations, the courts see otherwise. Roommates, we will continue to keep you updated as the trial approaches in 2021.
