A resource officer has reportedly been removed from active duty after allegedly tasing Lanier Johnson-Hunt, an 18-year-old student, on a school bus in Atlanta.
According to Atlanta News First, the incident occurred on Thursday, December 18. Per the outlet, a school bus was transporting students from Langston Hughes High School when a resource officer and a student became involved in a “confrontation.” Per Johnson-Hunt, the officer was “new” and “thought he didnt belong on the bus.”
When Johnson-Hunt refused to exit the bus, the “resource officer tased him multiple times.”
In an interview with Atlanta News First, Johnson-Hunt says he was expelled from school. Additionally, the outlet reports that the resource officer was “removed from active duty.” Nonetheless, the footage of the incident has gone viral online, with Fulton County Schools reportedly releasing a statement:
“The incident is being taken seriously and is currently under review.”
Meanwhile, Johnson-Hunt told the press:
“At the moment, nothing was going through my mind. Ive never been tased before. But now I think thats crazy. Youre a school resource officer. Youre supposed to be helping us, and youre tasing random kids. Theres no point in you tasing me at all.”
Per WSB-TV, the 18-year-old has now retained civil rights attorney Harry Daniels.
Its obvious in the video that this young man wasnt a threat to anyone. He was simply trying to get home and take care of his autistic brother, and they tased him for it,” Daniels explained, adding more context to the apparent circumstances.
To note, the 18-year-old appeared alongside his lawyer at a press conference on Tuesday, December 22. There, Johnson-Hunt showed the press the scars he sustained from the incident.
The incident in Atlanta isn’t the only one to make headlines in connection with a high school. As The Shade Room previously reported, in November 2024, a high school football coach was reportedly suspended for watching NSFW videos in a classroom at Miami Jackson Senior High School.
At the time, CBS News obtained footage of one incident, which showed the coach watching the material in the presence of at least one student. Ultimately, the Miami-Dade School District released a statement explaining that the coach would be removed while an investigation unfolded.
