Roommates, tragic details are emerging surrounding the sudden passing of Shirley Raines, a beloved community activist whose work touched millions. Now, her twin sister is opening up about what happened in Shirleys final hours as Lizzo shares a tribute and the story is deeply heartbreaking.
Shirley Rainess twin sister, Shelia, is speaking out following her death at age 58. Shirley, widely known for her nonprofit Beauty 2 The Streetz and her tireless work providing food, hygiene products, and support to Skid Rows unhoused community, was found dead on Tuesday, according to the Clark County Coroners Office. The news was first shared publicly in a Wednesday Instagram statement from her organization.
Shelia tells PEOPLE that Shirleys youngest daughter tried calling her several times that day, hoping to visit her home in Henderson, Nevada. After getting no response, she drove to the house, waited outside, and even threw rocks at the window in an attempt to get her mothers attention. Growing increasingly worried, she contacted the police for a wellness check. Authorities later found Shirley unresponsive on the side of her bed, with no visible signs explaining her death. “Were in shock,” Shelia shared.
Shortly after news of Shirleys passing surfaced, Lizzo took to her Instagram Story and shared a heartbreaking video of herself breaking down in tears. With her face close to the camera, the singer spoke through sobs about the profound impact Shirley had on her life, stressing that her work with Beauty 2 The Streetz should never be forgotten and recalling how she supported the organization through donations. Lizzo also revealed that during some of her darkest momentswhen others turned their backsShirley remained a constant source of encouragement and never wavered in her support.
