The next time you are talking about the dynamics between African American men and Police Officers in conversation, make sure you pull up the video below.
People tend to think that there is no just cause for black men in America to fear the police. However, there are several cases a year where unarmed black men are fatally shot to death by police who claim to fear their lives. In many circumstances there is no video evidence to show the validity of their statements. The reality is that black men have to question if a “routine” traffic stop will result in their death.
On Tuesday, after video evidence of a white police officer from North Charleston fatally shooting an unarmed black man in the back as he ran away surfaced, the officer was charged with murder.
It was the usual defense, Officer Michael T. Slater claimed that he feared for his life after encountering Walter L. Scott (victim) who he claimed tried to steal his stun gun. First of all, a stun gun is not fatal, so how could the officer fear for his life? Secondly the video shows Walter running away from the Officer when he was shot 8 times.
If there wasn’t footage this officer would be free to patrol the streets like so many officers in the past. How can black men feel safe in the presence of officers when they are used for target practice time and time again?
