
The nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards have officially been released and there are some mixed reviews.
People are celebrating as the Netflix documentary American Factory, earned a nomination for Best Documentary. The nomination goes to the films producers Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert, and Jeff Reichert. Nonetheless, it is also an achievement for the Obamas, since the film is the first release from their Higher Ground production company.
Obama took to social media to react to the news and said, “Oscar nominations came out today and Im glad to see American Factorys nod for Best Documentary. I like this film for its nuanced, honest portrayal of the way a changing global economy plays out in real lives. It offers a window into people as they actually are and its the kind of story we dont see often enough. This is exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve through Higher Ground.”
Cynthia Erivo, who portrayed Harriet Tubman in the 2019 film Harriet, also earned two nominations. She earned nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song, which brings her one step closer to becoming an EGOT winner.
There are also talks about a few people getting snubbed from this years show, including Lupita Nyongo. Many people were upset to see that she did not get a nomination for her roles in Jordan Peeles box office hit Us. Many people expressed their disappointment, one person said, “Yall love your black women in the key of slave narrative over there in Hollywood. Lupita was sitting right there playing 2 goddamn roles.”
