The University Of Minnesota To Limit Their Ties To The Minneapolis Police Department Following George Floyd’s Death

Many people around the world have been expressing their anger and disappointment in response to the death of George Floyd after a Minneapolis police officer was seen on video kneeling on his neck, which eventually led to his death.

The University of Minnesota, which is located in Minneapolis recently announced that they will be limiting their ties to the police department following George’s death.

According to CNN, the university’s president released a statement to faculty and students late Wednesday making the announcement. President Joan Gabel said the university will “no longer contract with the Minneapolis Police Department for additional law enforcement support.”

The statement continued to say that the university will not use the police department for “specialized services are needed for university events.”

“I do not have the words to fully express my pain and anger and I know that many in our community share those feelings, but also fear for their own safety. We will limit our collaboration with the MPD to joint patrols and investigations that directly enhance the safety of our community or that allow us to investigate and apprehend those who put our students, faculty, and staff at risk.”

As we previously reported, George Floyd was pronounced deceased after a video posted to social media showed a police officer kneeling on his neck. He pleaded with the officer to get off of his neck because he could not breathe. The officer remained on his neck until he could no longer breathe. He was taken away from the scene unresponsive and later announced deceased.
