TikTok Launches New ‘SoundOn’ Platform To Let Artists Directly Upload & Monetize Their Music

If you’ve spent even a small amount of time on TikTok, then you know that it has quickly become one of the leading ways for artists to break new music—and now TikTok has officially launched a new way for them to do so easily and financially. Called ‘SoundOn,’ TikTok’s new feature puts the spotlight on artists by letting them monetize their music, while also offering the ability to upload it directly.

Realizing just how much of an impact its platform has on the careers of artists (especially those who are smaller and/or independent) TikTok has launched a new feature that aims to give them the control, credit and money they deserve. @Variety reports, TikTok has a new platform called SoundOn, that is described as an “all-in-one platform” for music marketing and distribution—that specifically allows artists upload their music directly to the platform and earn royalties when TikTok creators use the music in their own videos. Additionally, all SoundOn creators will receive 100% of their royalties in the first year and 90% any time after that, with no administrative fees, as confirmed by TikTok. The company also said that compensation is “based on how often your music is used in TikTok videos.”

To access SoundOn, artists simply access the music tab in TikTok that shows their music under their profile—and then users will be able to see their profile under the song page of each track. That’s not all, as the new feature gives artists the option to distribute their music to Resso (ByteDance’s music-streaming app) and streaming services such as Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora and more, with the option to choose which platforms they like. For an even more in-depth experience, SoundOn features development support, in-house assistance from TikTok, promotional support and audience insights.

Ole Oberman, Global Head of Music at TikTok, explained the new launch, saying “New artists and musical creators are a vibrant community within TikTok and SoundOn is designed to support them as they take the first steps in their career. We’re incredibly excited about how this will surface and propel new talent and how SoundOn will contribute to an increasingly diverse and growing global music industry.”
