Today Is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day

#Roommates, did you know that for every dollar a man earns, the average woman only makes about 80 cents? The gender gap is real, and according to Forbes, it’s even greater for black women.

Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day and it’s all about giving sistas equal pay for equal work! A study by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research says that black women make 38 percent less than white men and 21 percent less than white women, and it’s time for change.

“The pay gap facing black women is an urgent problem,” said Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and founder of LeanIn.Org. “It has huge financial implications for millions of families. And it signals something deeply wrong in our economy. We need to address the gender and racial inequalities that give rise to this imbalance—and create workplaces where everyone’s labor is valued, everyone is treated with respect, and everyone has an equal shot at success.”

To put things more into perspective, Fortune reports that “a black woman, on average, would have to work 19 months — or roughly January of one year until August of the next — to make what a white man made in one calendar year.”

It’s about time!
