Sadly, It seems as if campus shootings are becoming the norm. A student at Northern Arizona University opened fire on a group of students, killing one and injuring three others early this morning.
According to NY Post, a fight broke out in the parking lot of Mountain View Hall Dormitory between two student groups. It ended in the suspect Steven Jones, fatally killing a student and wounding three others.
The victims are being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center, according to the school’s Facebook page. In the meantime, the alleged shooter, Steven has been arrested and reportedly cooperating with authorities.
Police Chief Gregory Fowler says at this time he has no details about what started the confrontation or what student groups the young men belonged to. He did say, however, that not all of them are campus housing residents.
University officials said via Twitter that the situation is stabilized and the campus of 20,000 students is not on lock down. Classes are continuing as scheduled today, according to university president, Rita Cheng. She assured that professors were instructed to address people’s needs.
“This is not going to be a normal day at NAU,” Cheng said. “Our hearts are heavy.”
President Obama plans to meet with families of the Umpqua victims in Roseburg on Friday.
