Roommates, the topic of colorism has been heavy across our timeline all week, and its not surprising that its back on Twitter. Earlier today, Rick Ross was trending on Twitter after a resurfaced clip appeared from his 2017 TV show Signed, in which he, The Dream, and Lenny S were judges. The show was set on finding a new R&B star that would be signed to Roc Nation, MMG, or Radio Killa Records. In the clip, singers JustBrittany and Kaiya showcased their songs over Ricks “Aston Martin Music” instrumental.
When Brittany performed, she easily won over judges getting great feedback from the men. After Brittanys performance, Rick told her the future was bright, The Dream said the music was bright, and Lenny told her performing the song was the “smartest move of her life.” Once Kaiya performed, her feedback wasnt the same. Rick told her the song wasnt the best platform for her unique voice, and Brit did sound better than her.
Everyone on social media left several comments calling out the industry of colorism, amongst other things. TSR exclusively spoke with Kaiya to get her reaction about the trending topic. Kaiya said, The resurfacing of the video is so surreal. Im humbled that a lot of people have come out in support of my journey. Colorism is a topic that needs to be discussed wholly and not summed up in one response, but its very disheartening to know so many go through this male or female. She continued saying, To pin Black women and men against one another, or make it where some are seen superior is sad. As the years go on, I hope its being addressed and rectified in the future.
Kaiya gave more insight into her experience following the show, and the relationships she developed with the other contestants. She told TSR the experience was Very positive. Ive met some really talented people, we have developed friendships, and keep in touch. The guidance and critiques, Ive received on my overall performance have been invaluable.
Everyone wants to know what Kaiyas plans are for releasing new music. She stated, Ive never stopped performing. Im currently writing original songs. Im also reaching out to other songwriters and producers. Im perfecting my sound every day. Im achieving this by taking personal experiences, over the years, and putting them to music. She is currently in the process of putting out new videos.
As of right now, Kaiya hasnt heard from Rick Ross, The Dream, or Lenny S. She understands, The men are super busy, and that it will be awesome to work with them again! Kaiya offered some words of advice for up and coming singers, Keep grinding. Stay motivated and focused. Always work on improving your brand, which is you. Collab! Collab!! Collab!!! This is essential because of your exposure to others, who are in the business, and the invaluable connections made.
Good luck, Kaiya. We’re rooting for you!
