TSR Updatez: The jury in the Amber Guyger murder trial has sentenced the former Dallas cop to 10 years in prison.

The sentence was issued just hours after the jury found Guyger guilty in the murder of her upstairs neighbor Botham Jean. She was looking at a maximum of life in prison.

Guyger fatally shot Jean in his own apartment a little more than a year ago, claiming that she mistook his apartment for hers and thought he was a burglar in her apartment. The jury believed that her use of deadly force was not justified.

Jean’s mother Allison Jean testified about the effect Jean’s murder has had on their tight-knit family at Guyger’s sentencing hearing. “My life has not been the same. It’s been like a roller coaster,” she said. “I can’t sleep. I can’t eat. It’s been the most terrible time for me. I almost am not able to work but I just try to busy myself to see if I could get out of my head but it’s been very very difficult.”

Allison Jean explained she tries to keep the family together because everyone is in pain. Jean’s siblings also testified about his loving character, while his sister explained that her son fears police officers now.

Other evidence provided in Guyger’s sentencing hearing included transcripts of text messages of hers that were racist in nature as well as social media posts liked and shared by her that suggest she’d be capable of committing such a crime.

Prosecutors say Jean was watching television and eating ice cream when Amber burst into his apartment before shooting him in the chest.

When she testified in her own defense, Guyger said, “I wish he was the one with the gun and killed me.” She also claimed she was scared the night of the murder and that she hates that she has to live with this for the rest of her life.
