#TSRPositiveImages: A Group Of Activists Raised Over $250k To Release Women From Jail For Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and these black activist groups are working tirelessly to get at least 30 women out of jail and back with their families for the holiday. They’re calling it National Black Mama’s Bail Out Day. While their immediate focus is mothers, their ultimate goal is to “end mass criminalization and modern bondage.”
According to Vibe, a coalition was formed by Black Lives Matter enthusiasts from Southerners on New Ground (SONG), the Movement for Black Lives, Color Of Change and a few more. The group says their target is women in partial detention for low-level offenses.
The group has already raised over $250K which will be used to pay the bond for women in Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and a few other cities.
One of the partnering organizations said:
“The National Black Mama’s Bail Out Day Action is part of the growing movement to end mass criminalization and modern bondage. It is rooted in the history of Black liberation, inspired by the enslaved Africans and Black people who used their collective resources to purchase each other’s freedom. Through this action, we will support birth mothers, trans mothers, and other women who mother and are entangled in the criminal legal system. We’re fundraising in our local communities and across the South to help bring as many Black mamas and caregivers as we can for Mother’s Day to give them an opportunity to spend Mother’s day with their families, highlight the human costs of inhumane and destructive bail practices, and support local base-building on the frontlines of mass incarceration.”
