#TSRTunes: 10 Times The Covers Did The Original Song Justice

We all know the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and 9 times out of 10, I’m going to agree with that, but in the music world, I see things a little differently.

Artists cover older songs all the time. Even some of the greatest of all time have hits that are covers of someone else’s song. Some see it as biting, others see a remake as paying tribute to a song or artist that inspired them.

What it really boils down to is, did the cover do the original song justice? Well in these 10 cases, we think they did!

In honor of #BlackMusicMonth, we highlight some more of our most talented and the artists they inspired. SWIPE to let us know which covers are your faves and comment any others below!

  • “I’m Every Woman”: With all due respect to the queen Chaka Khan, Whitney made this hers.
  • “Killing Me Softly”: The Fugees hip hop cover of Roberta Flack’s song is a classic.
  • “Lately”: K-Ci and Jojo sang their behinds off on their cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Lately.”
  • “Marvin’s Room”: Jojo did it for the ladies with this cover of Drake’s smash.
  • “I Will Always Love You”: Y’all wouldn’t know this Dolly Parton song if it wasn’t for Whitney.
  • “All I Do is Think of You”: Troop’s cover of the Jackson 5 original had us at the falsetto.
  • “Knocks Me Off My Feet”: Donnell Jones did that when it comes to Stevie’s song.
  • “Emotion”: Destiny’s Child’s cover of the Samantha Sang song is the only one we acknowledge.
  • “At Your Best”: Aaliyah’s cover of the Isley Brothers song made the younger generations appreciate it.
  • “Trip”: Despite all the controversy, we got to give props to Jacquees for killing this cover.
