Two Dead And Hundreds Injured Following An Amtrak Train Crash In South Carolina

On Sunday, it was reported that two people were confirmed dead, and hundreds of others were injured following an Amtrak train crash in South Carolina.

According to the New York Daily News, the train left New York’s Penn Station and was headed towards Miami, when the incident took place around 2:35am, just south of Columbia. The train hit a stationary CSX train.

South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster said, “It appears to me that the CSX was on the track that it was supposed to be on. It appears that Amtrak was on the wrong track.”

He didn’t say how fast the train was going, but reportedly it’s been indicated that it was possibly moving as fast as 59 mph.

The train left New York with 139 passengers and eight crewmembers. The Lexington County coroner confirmed the engineer, Engineer Michael Kempf, 54, and conductor Michael Cella, 36 as the deceased.

A Lexington County spokesperson said about 116 people were injured during the crash and treated for injuries ranging from bruises to broken bones. All passengers were cleared from the train around 6:30am.

Donald Trump took to Twitter to talk about the incident and said:

This is the second train crash to take place this week. A train carrying GOP Congress members and their families struck a garbage truck earlier this week, killing one person.

The National Transportation Safety Board said they are in the process of investigating the crash.
