#Roommates, it’s been almost three months since Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in the hopes of stopping Joe Biden from officially been sworn in as President—now two police officers have just hurled a new legal challenge Trump’s way. According to recent reports, two U.S. Capitol police officers have officially filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump for his role in the January 6th attack that left five people dead.
@CBSNews reports, U.S. Capitol police officers James Blassingame (a 17-year veteran officer) and Sidney Hemby (an 11-year vet) have both filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump for his conduct regarding the U.S. Capitol riots. The lawsuit claims that Trump’s repeated claims of election fraud led to the attack from the large mob of his supporters. The pair also state in the lawsuit that they suffered both physical and emotional injuries as a result. Blassingame and Hemby are seeking compensatory damages of a minimum of $75,000 each and punitive damages of an unspecified amount.
According to the formal complaint that was filed in federal district court of D.C., the two officers state that Trump “inflamed, encouraged, incited, directed and aided and abetted” those who stormed the U.S. Capitol on his behalf. Additionally, Blassingame revealed that during the attack he was called racial slurs repeatedly, while both officers explained they suffered multiple injuries as they attempted to stop the rioters—including being hit in the face, head, chest and having objects thrown at them while being sprayed with chemicals.
The lawsuit further states, “Through his words in the months following the 2020 presidential election and speaking from a position of authority over his followers, [Mr. Trump] planted the seeds that made likely the violence that was unleashed on James Blassingame and Sidney Hemby on January 6, 2021.”
As of now, Trump has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
