U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch Announces The Launch of the Investigation of Chicago Police

Yesterday, Loretta Lynch announced that the Department of Justice will be investigating the policing going on in the Chicago Police Department. This is happening just two weeks after video was released of the unjustified murder of LaQuan McDonald, who was senselessly shot by a white officer 16 times! Due to an increase in unjustified killings by police, Lynch revealed that the investigation would especially focus on the department’s “use of force and deadly force, including racial, ethnic and other disparities in use of force, and its systems of accountability” as reported by the NY Post.

Lynch continued with further details about the origins of launching the investigation:

“We understand that the same systems that fail community members also fail conscientious officers by creating mistrust between law enforcement and the citizens they are sworn to serve and protect. This mistrust from members of the community makes it more difficult to gain help with investigations, to encourage victims and witnesses of crimes to speak up, and to fulfill the most basic responsibilities of public safety officials,” she said. “And when suspicion and hostility is allowed to fester, it can erupt into unrest.”

Currently, the Chicago Police department and Mayor Rahm Emanuel are under intense scrutiny over how they handled the October 2014 death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. It took them until November 24th, 2015 to convict Officer Jason Van Dyke of first-degree murder! This was just over a year after the murder and the same day that police dashboard camera footage was exposed which showed the officer shooting the teenager.

The NY Post:

“Since the release of the video, Emanuel forced Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy to resign and formed a task force to examine the police department. But the calls for the mayor to resign — something he said he won’t do — have grown louder from protesters, including the voices of more than 200 people during a march Sunday. Protesters counted to 16, in reference to the shots fired. Politicians, including Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, have called for the federal civil rights investigation. The Rev. Jesse Jackson said he was pleased with the decision and added that he hoped the investigation would focus not only on the police department, but on Emanuel’s office and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which he and others have criticized for taking so long to bring charges against Van Dyke.”

Unfortunately, civil unrest has become second nature to citizens who are fed up with systematic injustices. Just look at Ferguson and Baltimore throughout any appointed time in the last 50 years! An investigation such as this is long overdue, but it’s more necessary than ever now and hopefully it will encourage other people in high places to expose the evil practices going on in these places.
