United Airlines Will Require All Of Their U.S. Employees To Be Vaccinated

It looks like United Airlines will become the first major airline to enforce that all of their employees be vaccinated against COVID-19.

According to CNBC, the airline announced that they are requiring their 67,000 U.S. employees to receive the vaccine no later than October 25th, or they can risk being terminated from their roles at the airline.

On Friday, United CEO Scott Kirby and President Brett Hart spoke out in an employee note and said, “We know some of you will disagree with this decision to require the vaccine for all United employees. But, we have no greater responsibility to you and your colleagues than to ensure your safety when you’re at work, and the facts are crystal clear: everyone is safer when everyone is vaccinated.”

Executives at the airline added, “Over the last 16 months, Scott has sent dozens of condolences letters to the family members of United employees who have died from COVID-19. We’re determined to do everything we can to try to keep another United family from receiving that letter.”

CNBC reports that executives announced employees must provide proof of being vaccinated five weeks after federal officials give full approval to them or by October. 25th, whichever comes first. However, the mandate will not apply to regional airlines that fly shorter routes for United, and there will also be an exception for those with certain health issues or religious reasons.

Many cities are also contemplating enforcing vaccinations in order to participate in indoor activities.

As we previously reported, earlier this week New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced the “Key to NYC Pass,” initative, which is expected to begin on September 13th. It will require people to show proof of vaccination in order to participate in indoor activities.
