According to ESPN, unvaccinated players “will be subjected to a fine of $14,650 every time they violate COVID-19 procedures.”
This comes after Bruce Arians, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach, told The Tampa Bay Times that players could possibly be fined $14,000 for violating COVID-19 protocol.
Arians also stated while he wasn’t “going to tell anybody to get a mask on,” but they’ll be hit with a fine “automatically.”
While Arians didn’t immediately clarify if this was a league imposed policy, ESPN reports that Brian McCarthy, a spokesperson for the NFL, stated Arians “was correct” regarding his understanding of the rules.
This comes after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated in a memo that players on both teams would lose earnings, and that he “retains the authority to impose additional sanctions, particularly if the Covid outbreak is reasonably determined to be the result of a failure by NFL personnel to follow applicable protocols.”
According to the Associated Press, “80 percent of the league’s players are in the process of getting vaccinated,” The Hill reports. As previously reported, other entities are also placing stricter COVID-19 protocols. The state of California is now requiring that state and health care workers receive the vaccination or be subjected to testing twice a week.
Governor Newsom stated, “On Monday, Governor Newsom stated, in part, “As the state’s largest employer, we are leading by example and requiring all state and health care workers to show proof of vaccination or be tested regularly, and we are encouraging local governments and businesses to do the same. Vaccines are safe – they protect our family, those who truly can’t get vaccinated, our children and our economy. Vaccines are the way we end this pandemic.”
Should NFL players be fined, if they’re unvaccinated and don’t follow the protocol?
