It’s been a minute since everyone’s bae Usher dropped some new music, but today he dropped an inspiring and empowering single featuring Nas and Bibi Bourelly!
This song was released with an interactive video through Tidal music service, but is also available to everyone. It’s not just any song, Usher is singing about the many victims of police brutality and shining light on their lost lives. The song title “Chains” has some very heavy lyrics both in the hook and the verses, repeating “We still in chains” multiple times throughout the song.
Not only does the song pay homage to victims like Trayvon Martin, Rekia Boyd and Caesar Cruz, but the video forces you to look into the eyes of these victims. As the video plays, brief descriptions of what happened to each show up on the screen.
The message that this song is bringing is a lot different than the smooth Usher we know, but it is very necessary. In an interview, Usher said that he was motivated by events involving prejudicial events. All of the proceeds made from this single will go to a social justice organization, according to complex.
Usher will be performing this single for the first time at the Tidal X: 1020 benefit concert. The show is on October 20th and will feature a variety of performances from Prince to Nicki Minaj.
