Vice President Kamala Harris Urges The Senate To Pass The ‘George Floyd Justice In Policing Act’

As the day whined down after the guilty verdict for the Derek Chauvin trial, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the nation before President Joe Biden. VP Harris seemed eager to speak out and almost took a tumble as she approached the podium. Instead of being frazzled, she regained her composure as she addressed the nation.

With her signature polished blown-out hair and wearing pearls, VP Harris spoke eloquently as she thanked George’s family and the jurors for ensuring the justice we received today. She spoke about the value of Black men stating, “Black men are fathers and brothers and sons and uncles and grandfathers and friends and neighbors,” she said. “Their lives must be valued in our education system, in our health care system, in our housing system, in our economic system, in our criminal justice system, in our nation.”

VP Harris wasted no time stating that she and President Biden will continue fighting for police reform and urged the Senate to pass the “George Floyd Justice In Policing Act.” Last summer, the act was introduced through VP Harris in partnership with Senator Corey Booker and Rep. Karen Bass. The Act is considered a civil rights and police reform bill drafted by the Democrats in the United States Congress. This including members of the Congressional Black Caucus. The legislation was first introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on February 24, 2021.

According to reports from The Hill, Democrats have been applying pressure on Senate Republicans to pass the bill. The bill is significant because it will prohibit racial profiling at every level of law enforcement, ban chokeholds, carotid holds, and no-knock warrants. In addition, the act will institute a national police misconduct registry and overhaul legal protections currently afforded to law enforcement known as qualified immunity.

Let’s hope that this act can get passed for George’s legacy.
