On Wednesday, as the 2021 SWAC Champions were headed to the Cricket Bowl, the high school senior decided to announce to the world that he had a change of heart and committed to Jackson State.

Though he was thankful for the opportunity from FSU, the Florida native decided that it was better to make history at an HBCU. In an interview with 11alive, Hunter stated, “I got a chance to make a change in history. I mean … me being the first (top) recruit to ever got to an HBCU is really good for me.”

Hunter also stated that Sanders and the Jackson State community made him feel welcomed. “Along with Coach Prime, they have made me feel like I’m already part of the team. Like I’m home,” Hunter said.

In today’s social climate, HBCUs are seeing an increase in enrollment, NBC News reports. Howard University reported seeing a 15% enrollment increase since the pandemic started.

“This has the potential to be our largest freshman class ever … certainly in the last 30 years,” Howard Provost and Chief Academic Officer Anthony Wutoh said.

As you may know, Sanders graduated from North Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers, FL and attended Florida State until he went pro his junior year. The Hall of Famer went on to become one of the best Defensive Backs in the NFL.
