Will Packer And Aaron McGruder Team Up For A New Amazon Alt-History Drama ‘Black America’

Recently it was announced that Amazon is developing a new alternate history drama series entitled, “Black America,” which includes the involvement of Will Packer and Aaron McGruder.

According to Deadline, the announcement of the new series’ title comes shortly after HBO announced their new show “Confederate,” which is a post Civil War series that depicts what would have happened if the South had succeeded during the war and slavery was still legal and had evolved into a modern institution.

As you can imagine HBO has faced tons of backlash behind this new series.

According to the synopsis of “Black America,” it will “envision an alternate history where newly freed African Americans have secured the Southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama post-Reconstruction as reparations for slavery, and with that land, the freedom to shape their own destiny.”

Will Packer spoke about the project, which has been in development for more than a year, he said, “I was immediately enthralled by the idea; I couldn’t stop thinking about it and what a provocative and bold piece of content it could be.”

He continued, “It was something that was personally intriguing for me as a black American. You would be hard pressed to find many black Americans who have not thought about the concept of reparation, what would happen if reparations were actually given.”

As he expressed his excitement for the upcoming project, Packer declined to comment directly on HBO’s new series but did say, “The fact that there is the contemplation of contemporary slavery makes it something that I would not be a part of producing nor consuming. Slavery is far too real and far too painful, and we still see the manifestations of it today as a country for me to ever view that as a form of entertainment.”

The project was first mentioned by Deadline back in February, but at the time it was untitled and the premise was not revealed. The announcement of HBO’s new show “prompted the “Black America” team to reveal the project’s premise.

Aaron McGruder who is most known for his Adult Swim series, “The Boondocks,” and “Black Jesus,” will also be contributing to the new Amazon series.

Roommates, what are your thoughts?
