Will Smith Talks Jaden Wearing Women’s Clothing, The Oscars, & Upcoming Projects

Recently Will Smith made a visit to BBC Radio 1Xtra and touched on things such as his upcoming projects,  his son Jaden wearing womens clothing, whether or not Willow has a curfew and of course the Oscars and Janet Hubert.

After running down his list of credentials, host A. Dot asked Smith about his involvement in the sequel to the classic film Independence Day. Unfortunately due to timing and the filming of his next film Suicide Squad, he was not able to reprise his role for the film. Nonetheless, he did confirm that he and Martin Lawrence would be joining forces once again for Bad Boys.

When asked if he consciously lets his children have freedom of expression, he jokingly laughed and said, Yeah I think it may have been a mistake. We may have gone too far.

He then commented on people joking about Jaden wearing womens clothing, Theres really a powerful internal quality as an artist that, as parents, we encourage. You have to get out on the edge. You have to try things. You have to be comfortable doing things that people dont agree with. And you have to be comfortable doing things that you can fail. Jaden is 100 percent fearless. He will do anything. So, as a parent, its scary. Its really terrifying, but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions. He just doesnt concern himself with what people think.

Now Willow on the other hand, like every other teenager, she has a curfew and definitely tries to stretch it out when its time for her to come home.

When it comes to his opinion on the Oscars Boycott, To me, its so far not about me. Its not about us going to a show or not. This is a much bigger social issue. Im recognizing a pattern of the narrowing of the imagery, the narrowing of tolerance in America.

Before the interview came to an end, he commented on Janet Hubert as he was asked if he preferred the first Aunt Viv or the second Aunt Viv. He laughed and said, Janet Hubert brought a really powerful dignity to the show. I think shes brilliant, I think as an artist theres so many things that she does. She sings, she dances, shes like a really powerful artist.
