Roommates, it’s been nearly 13 years since the passing of the King of Comedy Bernie Mac, and it still seems unreal. The Chicago native, whose career spanned decades, passed away in 2008 at the age of 50 due to complications with Pneumonia. TheNAACP winner was a staple in the Black comedy industry, and although he isnt with us, John Legend is gearing up to tell Bernies life story!
According to reports from Hollywood Reporter, Johns business partner Mike Jackson announced during a panel discussion at the 2021 Tribeca Festival that Johns production company, Get Lifted, will be producing a biopic about Bernie!
Now ya’ll know that there have been many biopic movies, and unfortunately, not all of them have gotten it right. Weve seen how the world reacted to Aaliyahs Lifetime biopic executive produced by Wendy Williams. Many were upset about the late singer’s portrayal by Alexandria Shipp and felt like the film shouldn’t have happened because Aaliyahs family wasnt involved. However, we dont have to worry about that with this film.
Mike surprised John with the additional news during the panel, We just partnered with Bernie Macs estate to cover Bernie Macs story, he said. Something that John doesnt know about yet and that he was very excited about the deal, which just happened today. John responded, Look at you breaking news over here.
Details about the feature film’s release are slim, right not, but this project seems to be personal for John. Mike called the project a full-circle moment. The two men worked together in Bernies final film, Soul Men which also starred Samuel L. Jackson.
