Akon Says He Could Have Restored Power To Puerto Rico Months Ago, Says He Was Shut Down By The Government

#HurricaneMaria brought devastation to #PuertoRico back in September and millions of citizens struggled to live without access to clean water. As of today, the US Department of Energy reports that 85.64% of customers (1,261,513) have been restored, however singer #Akon says that they should have had 100% restoration months ago and that he could have done it.

His organization Akon Lighting Africa has brought electricity to 14 African countries, so it had the capability to do the same for P.R. However, he says that his proposal was rejected. “We actually presented a program for Puerto Rico and we got rejected. We had the solution for Puerto Rico, clearly. We would have power up in less than 30 days, and they rejected us,” Akon told @TMZ_Tv.

The singer went on to explain that certain principalities weren’t genuinely interested in helping these people. “It’s politics, propaganda, and special interests. They didn’t care about the people—if that was the case, they would have allowed us to go in and provide the solution. But I think it was bigger than numbers at that point.”

Check out the rest of the clip over at TMZ where Akon shares his thoughts on Donald Trump calling Haiti a “sh*thole country.”
