New York City Council Approves Street Co-Naming For The Notorious B.I.G And Wu-Tang Clan

Recently, the New York City Council unanimously voted to honor three musical artists from the city by co-naming streets after them.

According to The Gothamist, the Notorious B.I.G, Wu-Tang Clan and Woody Guthrie were voted to be honored by having streets named after them.

The block where the Notorious B.I.G grew up is located at St. James Place between Fulton Street and Gates Avenue in Brooklyn. The street will now be co-named Christopher Wallace Way, which is the late rapper’s birth name.

Vanderbilt Avenue and Targee Street in Staten Island will reportedly be co-named Wu-Tang Clan District.

LeRoy McCarthy, the local culture advocate that was behind pushing for these streets to be renamed said, “I’m happy that NYC officials are finally giving the city’s indigenous ‘Hip Hop’ music the respect and recognition that it deserves. It took a long time and lots of hard-work to advance the Christopher Wallace Way & Wu-Tang Clan District street co-naming, but ya know what, Hip Hop Don’t Stop.”

Woody Guthrie Way, named after singer Woody Guthrie will be located at Mermaid Avenue between West 35th and West 36th streets in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn. The singer moved there with his wife back in 1943.

New York City’s mayor Bill de Blasio has to sign off on the bills to make it all official.
