To say that Kendrick Lamar had a good year is an understatement. With one of the best rap albums of the year and 11-Grammy Award nominations, the Compton rapper had one hell of a year.
Recently Kendrick sat down with The New York Times to talk about his successful year and his expectations for February’s Grammy Award Ceremony.
Back in 2014 he was snubbed after receiving 0 of the 7 awards he was nominated for. Fast forward to today he now has 11 nominations, which is just one short of Michael Jackson’s record. Kendrick commented on what award he wants to win the most, he said, “Ultimately, for the hip-hop community, I would love for us to win them all. Because we deserve that. Period.”
He continued, “This album did what I wanted it to do. That’s not necessarily to sell tons of records, though it didn’t do bad at that either but to actually have an impact on the people and on the culture of music.”
With the albums impact, his song “Alright” has definitely become an anthem among the Black Lives Matter campaign. “When I’d go in certain parts of the world, and they were singing it in the streets. When it’s outside of the concerts, then you know it’s a little bit more deep-rooted than just a song,” said Kendrick.
Kendrick also talked about other artists in hip-hop, naming Drake and Future as two artists who definitely made an impact this year. He also talked about his position as a role model and becoming accustomed to being an inspiration to others.
