Okay are y’all ready for this? The family of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy who was wrongfully murdered by Cleveland police back in 2014, has received a bill in the mail from Tamir’s final ambulance ride and guess what!? They are getting sued of the $500 owed!
As you can imagine, the family is in an outrage after receiving this notice from the city, who also was persistent that Tamir was the sole cause of his murder.
Subodh Chandra, the Rice family lawyer and Police Union President, Steve Loomis shared their insight on the bill. “Subodh Chandra and I have never agreed on anything until now,” Loomis told WJW. “It is unconscionable that the city of Cleveland would send that bill to the Rice family. Truly disappointing, but not at all surprising.” He said.
Chandra adds, “The callousness, insensitivity and poor judgment required for the city to send a bill … is breathtaking. This adds insult to homicide.” He further inserted that Samaria Rice, Tamir’s mother feels the $500 claim and invoice for Tamir’s ambulance ride is nothing but harassment.
Cleveland’s Mayor has since apologized to all parties affected by the notice. He claims that the filing was routine procedure by Tamir’s medical insurance company; however the bill was not intended to be sent to the family.
Furthermore, city officials claim that the family was never initially or directly billed for Tamir’s final medical services following the shooting incident.
The bill that included a $450 fee for ambulance advance life support” and $50 for mileage has since been withdrawn.
