El Chapo’s Son May Have Been Kidnapped At A Mexico Resort

Looks like the notorious drug lord, El Chapo is back in the news and no its not because he escaped again but because his son may have been kidnapped!

According to the Associated Press, Ivan Archivaldo Guzman was apparently dining at the La Leche restaurant in the city’s resort hotel district along with possibly 6 to 16 men ( the number has yet to be confirmed) when seven armed assailants came in and abducted them around 1 a.m. local time yesterday.

“According to witnesses from the place, several gunmen arrived to the place aboard a Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Suburban, who deprived the freedom of a group of people who were at the site,” Jalisco Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer said in statement translated by NBC News.

Many of the men who have been reportedly kidnapped were in possession of fake ids making it hard to pinpoint their identities. As of now authorities have been canvassing the scene for finger prints, video footage and the identifications in connection to several luxury vehicles left at the scene that may have belonged to the victims.

Officials are also ruling the kidnappings as an isolated incident to reassure tourists who may have heard the news.

“As an immediate safety measure, security has been reinforced in Puerto Vallarta to ensure that residents as well as tourists can continue with their normal activities,” the Puerto Vallarta tourist board said in a statement. “Early findings from the investigation led by the State Attorney of Jalisco, Eduardo Almaguer, stated that in a first examination, the victims and perpetrators belong to criminal groups from another region of the country, confirming the likelihood of this being an isolated case.”

For those who don’t know Ivan took over the business after his father was recaptured back in January… a promotion that many apparently didn’t agree with. AP also reports that Chapo’s son had a reputation of bragging about his extravagant and dangerous lifestyle all over social media, something that real cartels don’t do.

“Ivan Archivaldo was, I believe, a bit crazy,” said Raul Benitez, a security specialist who teaches political science at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. “He spent all his time posting things on Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter. A serious narco doesn’t do that.”

Benitez goes on to say that Ivan’s antics made many believe that the young cartel was incapable of running the Sinaloa gang in his father’s footsteps. “He was a ‘junior'” — a term Mexicans use to describe privileged youths — Benitez said according to AP. “He didn’t have the ability to run the cartel.”

As of now there is no word on who is behind the abduction but fingers are pointing at the Jalisco New Generation cartel, the largest operating cartel group in the state and rivals against the Sinaloa.

“There is a war right now for control of the Sinaloa cartel and a central theme in that war is the issue of attacks on his family,” Benitez said. “People have information about the family’s movements and they want to destroy the family.”
