Usain Bolt is no longer a triple triple Olympic gold medalist record holder thanks to his teammate Nesta Carter after a drug investigation put the legitimacy of their 2008 win in jeopardy.
The International Olympic Commitee had retested Carter’s sample from the 2008 Beijing Games back in 2016 and found methylhexaneamine, a stimulant that is banned. Since the finding, the IOC had announced that the Jamaican team had to return their medals from their men’s 4×100 relay run because they had been disqualified.
“The Jamaican team is disqualified from the men’s 4x100m relay event,” the IOC said Wednesday. “The corresponding medals, medalis8 pins and diplomas are withdrawn and shall be returned.”
According to reports, the committee is capable of holding samples for up to a decade, which may now bring Carter’s 2012 win into question as well.
Back in June, Carter had denied ever using any illegal substances.
“Carter alleged that he had never ingested or taken a substance known as or containing methylhexaneamine and later claimed that a retest of a 2008 sample in 2016 was ‘unduly late’ according to the IOC. The IOC can order to retest samples for up to 10 years after an Olympics.”
Bolt who says he is “not too pleased” about the situation had secured his record as tie for most Olympic track and field wins with Carl Lewis and Paavo Nurmi.
“It’s heartbreaking. Over the years you’ve worked hard to accumulate gold medals and work hard to be a champion,” Bolt said in a previous statement. “When it’s confirmed or whatever, if I need to give back my gold medal, I’d have to give it back, it’s not a problem to me.”
The IOC’s decision to retest 2008 Olympic samples with more advanced testing tools has now stripped over 40 gold medals and disqualified 80 athletes.
